This is a 1/2 size classical (nylon-string) guitar. Half size guitars are ideal for children 3-6 years old, in general. Nylon string guitars are usually preferred over steel strings for first time players. A child's fingers are very soft, and steel strings are not :) The nylon strings will keep their fingers from hurting and allow them to gradually get used to the feel. In addition, classical guitars have slightly wider fingerboards, which makes it easier to find the note they are looking for.

This is a well made guitar that's easy to play and easy on the checkbook. Not everyone decides to continue playing- so it's a good idea to spend conservatively at first.
